Loneliness and Mental Health: Why We Weren’t Built to Face Hard News Alone

Loneliness and Mental Health: Why We Weren’t Built to Face Hard News Alone

by Lori Stevic-Rust, PhD ABPP | Oct 9, 2026 | Becoming Real with Dr Lori Podcast

There’s an agreement in our house that I never expected we would need. My husband Jay doesn’t open his MyChart to look at test results unless we’re sitting together, holding hands. If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, you know...

Self-Care for Women: Why Functioning Isn’t the Same as Being Well

by Lori Stevic-Rust, PhD ABPP | Sep 27, 2026 | Becoming Real with Dr Lori Podcast

I recorded this week’s episode in the middle of a road trip, and I’ll be honest with you, driving is about as far from my idea of self-care as you can get. Somewhere along the highway I discovered that I can operate both the brake and the gas from the...

What does it mean to truly witness someone else’s What does it mean to truly witness someone else’s life?

Years ago, Holocaust survivor Rena Ferber Finder said something to me that I have never forgotten: “Now you are an eyewitness.”

At the time, I thought she was asking me to remember her story and share it with others. Ten years later, I understand those words differently.

Being an eyewitness is not only about what we have heard. It is about what we choose to do once we know.

Will we speak? Will we challenge hatred and indifference? Will we allow someone else’s story to change the way we live our own?

Perhaps courage begins in that uncomfortable moment when witnessing asks something more of us.

This is one of the important conversations we will have at Step Into Courage on October 25. I hope you will come and join us.

Self-care is taking care of the whole self. The p Self-care is taking care of the whole self.

The physical self that needs rest, movement, nourishment and medical care.

The emotional self that needs room to feel, process, grieve, laugh and sometimes say, “I’m not doing so well today.”

The relational self that needs people—not just people we text or follow, but people with whom we can be real.

And the part of us that needs meaning, purpose, curiosity and something to look forward to.

We’ve made self-care into something we do when we have time. I think it’s much bigger than that.

On this week’s Becoming Real with Dr. Lori, I’m talking about self-care as the ongoing work of caring for all the parts of ourselves—and why our relationships with other people belong in that conversation too.

Alzheimer’s has a women problem. Nearly two-third Alzheimer’s has a women problem.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s are women. And women also make up the majority of dementia caregivers.

But the story is more complicated than women simply living longer.

Researchers are continuing to study why Alzheimer’s affects women disproportionately—including the roles of genetics, cardiovascular and metabolic health, immune function, and the hormonal changes that occur across a woman’s life.

And then there is the other side of Alzheimer’s: caregiving. So often, women are not only thinking about their own brain health—they are caring for a parent, spouse or other loved one living with dementia.

These are conversations I believe we need to keep having: the women living with Alzheimer’s, the women caring for someone with it, and the science that may help us better understand both.

I’ve been talking about all of it on Becoming Real with Dr. Lori—from women, hormones and brain health to the very real experience of caregiving.

Because Alzheimer’s is not only a disease of memory. It changes women’s lives in more ways than one.

What happens when a doctor knows how to help—but t What happens when a doctor knows how to help—but the law prevents him from providing that care?

Doctors regularly witness suffering they cannot stop. A cancer progresses despite every available treatment. A patient is critically injured in an an accident. A disease advances even when the medical team has done everything possible.

In those moments, physicians often cope by reassuring themselves: I did everything I could.

But Dr. David Hackney asks us to consider a different kind of suffering.

What happens when a woman is forced to continue a pregnancy involving a life-limiting fetal condition—not because medicine has nothing to offer, but because the law has taken away her choice and prevented her doctor from providing the care she wants?

Can physicians still tell themselves they did everything they could when the barrier was not the limits of medicine, but a law created by people?

And if laws are contributing to their patients’ suffering, do doctors have a responsibility that extends beyond the exam room—to speak publicly, to share what they are witnessing, and to challenge the policies interfering with patient care?

This is where medicine, ethics, law, and the emotional reality of caring for another human being collide.
