by Lori Stevic-Rust, PhD ABPP | Jul 28, 2024 | Personal Reflections, Women's Empowerment

As I reflected on everything I had heard, I felt emotionally drained. Rena’s stories, images, and thoughts were not words in a history book: they were memories—her memories—and they lived inside of her.   Our time together had ended; I put my bags in the...

“This is gonna sound terrible.” After forty years “This is gonna sound terrible.”

After forty years as a health psychologist, I know what that sentence means. It means we’re getting close to the truth.

And for many caregivers, the truth underneath all the appointments and medications and phone calls is something they’ve never said out loud: I never wanted this role.

We talk about caregiving as an act of love, and often it is. But that’s not everyone’s story. Some people are being asked to care for a parent who abused them, or a spouse they were preparing to leave. A diagnosis creates needs — it doesn’t erase the history between two people.

On this week’s episode of Becoming Real, I’m having the conversation families don’t have.

What do you owe someone who needs care when the relationship has also caused you pain? And what kind of care can you honestly and safely provide?

If you’ve ever hung up the phone angry with yourself because you said yes again, this one is for you.

Guilt cannot be the entire care plan.

It is about how much emotional energy you are spending trying to keep everyone else comfortable.

That is often what we uncover underneath chronic overwhelm: people pleasing.

In this week’s episode of Becoming Real, I am talking about the psychology behind the automatic yes, why disappointing someone can feel so threatening, and what it costs when you keep abandoning your own answer.
