Silence: What does it say when we say nothing?

by Lori Stevic-Rust, PhD ABPP | Jun 12, 2020 | News, Women Entrepreneurs

Historically, politics and religion have been the two topics that we were often cautioned against discussing during the holidays, at business functions, or really just about any place where we want to keep the peace. We all know that these discussions are often...

What happens when a doctor knows how to help—but t What happens when a doctor knows how to help—but the law prevents him from providing that care?

Doctors regularly witness suffering they cannot stop. A cancer progresses despite every available treatment. A patient is critically injured in an an accident. A disease advances even when the medical team has done everything possible.

In those moments, physicians often cope by reassuring themselves: I did everything I could.

But Dr. David Hackney asks us to consider a different kind of suffering.

What happens when a woman is forced to continue a pregnancy involving a life-limiting fetal condition—not because medicine has nothing to offer, but because the law has taken away her choice and prevented her doctor from providing the care she wants?

Can physicians still tell themselves they did everything they could when the barrier was not the limits of medicine, but a law created by people?

And if laws are contributing to their patients’ suffering, do doctors have a responsibility that extends beyond the exam room—to speak publicly, to share what they are witnessing, and to challenge the policies interfering with patient care?

This is where medicine, ethics, law, and the emotional reality of caring for another human being collide.

Should doctors stay out of politics—or speak up wh Should doctors stay out of politics—or speak up when laws affect their patients’ health?

Dr. David Hackney makes an important point: laws are not natural phenomena that simply happen to us. People write them, people pass them, and people can influence them.

When a law interferes with medical care or harms patients, he believes physicians have a responsibility to bring their knowledge and experience beyond the exam room and into the public conversation.

In this episode, we examine the role doctors can—and perhaps should—play in shaping the laws that govern patient care.

The purpose of this conversation is not to change The purpose of this conversation is not to change anyone’s beliefs about abortion. It is to look beyond the political language and understand what abortion bans can mean when a pregnancy becomes high-risk—and the law enters the exam room.

My conversation with maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. David Hackney will be dropping tomorrow morning on Becoming Real with Dr. Lori.

His new book is entitled : Impossible Choices

I hope you will tune in.

If your symptoms have been dismissed or written of If your symptoms have been dismissed or written off as “a normal part of aging”—your joint pain as arthritis, your fatigue as simply getting older, or concerns about bone density as inevitable—it may be time to look more closely at hormones and the role they may be playing.

Menopause can affect far more than hot flashes. Consider speaking with a menopause-trained clinician who understands the full-body impact.
