Lessons from the Dragonfly’s Journey
“I Listened To My Dragonflies, And They Whispered, Have Faith.”
This quote has hung in my sister’s bedroom since the day she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. It’s more than just a picture on her wall—it’s become a lifeline, a reminder, and a quiet call for hope.
My sister has always been drawn to the dragonfly, its beauty, and its spiritual essence. In solidarity with her and our collective hope and faith, twelve of us got matching dragonfly tattoos.
Now, I’m not really a tattoo kind of gal—in fact, every time I look down at my foot and see that little dragonfly, it almost surprises me. But then I smile, thinking about that same dragonfly on the people I love, each of us carrying this quiet reminder of our resilience. It’s like my little dragonfly is whispering a reminder that we have a strength that we sometimes forget.
In our most challenging moments, these dragonflies are more than symbols—they’re a call to faith—not necessarily faith in a traditional sense, but a belief in hope, stamina, and resilience, in our ability to rise, and in the idea that even the smallest steps forward hold meaning.
But Why Dragonflies? Finding Meaning in Their Journey
What is it about these tiny, delicate creatures that inspire such a powerful sense of strength, hope, and transformation?
Maybe the answer lies in how the majestic dragonfly’s transformation story mirrors our journey in this brief life.
Like the dragonfly, the developmental journey of this life often involves long stretches of difficulty and hardships that challenge us, mold us, and shape us in unseen ways.
Yet, this long journey of hardship can often lead us to our most authentic transformation. For some of us, that transformation may be realized at the end of our lives, reflected in the legacy we leave behind. For others, it can be found in those fleeting, beautiful moments where we see the world in a new light, finding grace, purpose, or wonder in our brief time here.
The Dragonfly’s Transformation: From Struggle to Grace
Dragonflies have long held symbolic significance in various cultures, representing change, adaptability, and self-realization. In Native American traditions, they are seen as messengers, often carrying messages of hope, change, and resilience. In Japanese culture, the dragonfly is a symbol of courage, happiness, and renewal—a creature that embodies strength and lightness at once.
Across different beliefs, dragonflies represent a journey from darkness to light, from struggle to freedom.
When you understand their journey, it isn’t hard to understand why dragonflies are symbols of resilience and hope. The dragonfly spends the first part of its life as a nymph, living underwater for an incredible five years, hidden from view, enduring a slow process of growth.
Then they shed their skin multiple times, evolving gradually until finally, they’re ready to emerge from the water and transform. When they do, they break free from their old selves, spreading wings that allow them to rise above their former environment and soar.
But their time in the air is short—just a few months.
Incredible.
They spent five long years working on development under difficult circumstances, only to experience the hard-fought transformation for only a few months. But in that brief period, they live with purpose and beauty, their journey from water to air a profound symbol of transformation and freedom.
A Legacy of Strength: Lessons for Difficult Times
As I think about these incredible, spiritual creatures, they whisper to me to hold on to faith, faith in myself, and faith in others no matter how hard and long the journey can be.
Maybe faith is about trusting that every act of quiet courage and each of our seemingly small steps forward are shaping us into something extraordinary.
The truth is we all have a date—a birthdate and an end date—but in between lies a rare potential—to rise, to look up and out, and to truly see the wonder around us as we soar.
So why am I focused on thinking about my dragonfly now?
Well, probably because these have been difficult times filled with disappointment, grief, and fear—the perfect trifecta of emotions that sparks my desperate need for a reminder that these challenges are preparing me to rise. I believe that each hardship continues shaping me, helping me to leave a legacy—no matter how small—that says I made a difference.
Embracing Faith in Fleeting Moments
The dragonfly whispers, “Have faith,” because it knows that even in the briefest flight, there is strength, resilience, and a purpose beyond what we can see. Faith isn’t about knowing what’s ahead—it’s about trusting that, like the dragonfly, we’re made to take flight no matter how fleeting the journey may be.
Thank you, my sacred dragonfly, for the quiet reminder to lift my gaze and move with intention. In your brief, radiant flight, I see a call to live fully, to love without hesitation, and to let each day leave a mark of compassion, service, justice, and grace.
Let’s soar—
