The Voices in Your Head: Whose Are They Really?

by | May 30, 2026 | Becoming Real with Dr Lori Podcast | 2 comments

We all hear voices.

Not in the clinical, call-your-therapist kind of way. I mean the very human kind.

The running commentary.
The judge.
The narrator in your head.

The voice that says, Don’t be selfish.
You’re too sensitive.
Who do you think you are?
Don’t get too big for yourself.

And sometimes the strangest part is that the voice sounds so familiar we never stop to ask one very important question:

Whose voice is that?

In this episode of Becoming Real with Dr. Lori, I’m talking about negative self-talk, self-doubt, the inner critic, and the messages we carry for years without realizing they may not have started with us.

Some voices are beautiful. They come from the people who loved us well, saw something in us, or helped us believe a better story about ourselves.

And some voices are heavier.

They may have come from a parent, a teacher, a classmate, a culture, a relationship, or even from something we misunderstood as children and carried into adulthood as truth.

That is what makes this work so important. Because once you can hear the voice, you can begin to decide whether it still deserves authority in your life.

In this episode, I talk about:

Why negative self-talk can feel so believable
How childhood messages become part of our inner dialogue
Why the inner critic often sounds like protection
How women learn to question their ambition, sensitivity, needs, and power
Why are the good voices sometimes harder to receive than the painful ones
And how to begin asking: Is this true? Is this mine? Do I want to keep it?

This episode is not about blaming everyone who ever said the wrong thing.

It is about understanding how words become stories, how stories become beliefs, and how beliefs can quietly shape the way we live.

Because some of what feels most like you may have started in someone else’s mouth.

And maybe it is time to ask whether that voice still gets the final word.

Listen, if you have ever thought:

I’m too much.
I’m not enough.
I should be able to handle this.
They only said that because they love me.
I need to prove myself before I’m allowed to begin.

This conversation is for the part of you that is tired of being run by old messages.

You are not trying to silence every voice in your head.

You are learning to chair the meeting.

To begin your process of challenging these voices, here is a free guide with three questions that may help the way you see and hear yourself.
